I have always been too shy of taking photos of people in public spaces for the simple reason of wanting to minimize the odds of getting my ass kicked.
I have recently figured out that I can be stealthy in my photo taking when I use my iphone. It just looks as though I am doing something with it instead of stealing people's souls.

Haha, I feel your pain! I usually use my camera w/o flash, it has sound disabled for exactly this reason. My cell phone on the other hand is a joke, you can't disable the shutter sound, i guess it's an anti-perv feature.
I learned to use my iphone the same way, especially on the bus.
