Equestrian Police

Why do some police officers ride around on horses in downtown?

It just does not fit in with the concrete jungle (but then again, the concept of "fitting in" and "not fitting in" does not always fly in downtown). What are some practical advantages for police officers to ride horses around downtown? -Because rolling around in a segway or a razor scooter would cause nearby pedestrians and people sitting outside the nearby restaurants to point and laugh? Because it looks more friendly and less aggressive than just walking? Because police don't look so menacing when their mode of transport keeps stopping to poop?

Where do they keep these horses when they are not riding them? Who tends the horses? How do they find these horses? What becomes of them when they "retire"?

And how long does horse feces typically cook in the hot sun until it gets cleaned up?
